This is a necklace like you've never seen--found on the Galapagos islands, in a sealed teak box. Belonged to one strange man--Stephen Maturin, naturalist, ship's doctor, and spy during the Napoleonic wars.
...what is the broken heart about? Look closely, there is some rare vegetation illustrated in the etched ivory. Drops of crusted blood still drip from it...is that a button from his blouse? What about the ticking--perhaps he slept on that mattress...
...and what is the heavenly perfume that eminates from this artifact? Apparently he wore it against his skin, many many years. Were he alive today, I'd give it to him. A pity he lost it, running after a lava lizard.
I'm quite proud of this piece. I've taken some elements I've hoarded, and I ran with it. To begin with, the weight is delightful--it's a pleasure to wear and to hold. The little pillow I've made is stuffed full with fresh lavender, which is nervine, a brain tonic, intoxicating the nerves to plump up and smooth out like a fresh pillow.
I've taken the pillow motive one step further, using antique ticking on one side, which has been embellished with hand-crocheted linen, an antique button, and an antique scrimshaw piece in the shape of a heart, set in silver. I've kept the oxidation, naturally. Notice that the crocheted patch is actually a pocket stitched shut with red mohair. What is inside? Some things deserve to remain a mystery...
The other side is mudcloth with a swath of hand-embroidered cross-stitched antique linen.
The beads have been strung tightly on waxed cotton cord, each one securely knotted into place. There are glass beads from Mali, a sandwich resin art bead, horn beads, a few small bone beads from Indonesia, and some wood beads, as well as a piece of silk thrum in safran.
Closes with a horn bead.
Unisex, Master and Commander fits everyone, falling to just beneath the heart and above the stomach, where love sits.
