Manufacturer's washing suggestions: "I do not soak my diapers. I rinse any poop off in the toilet (I have a sprayer and highly recommend them - easy to install and WAY easier to clean the diaper than just swishing it in there) and put it in a dry pail. Wet diapers just go directly in the pail. Experiment with leaving the pail open. I have found it smells less with it open than with the lid closed. The lack of air circulation in a closed pail promotes the urine turning to ammonia.
Bleach is okay if you need it, but you want to use VERY little and rinse multiple times. You don't want any to be left in the fabric when baby wears it. If stains are the problem, usually hanging in the sun to dry works well to take them out. I recommend trying that a few times before resorting to bleach. Fabric softener is definitely not to be used, as it coats the fibers and prevents them from absorbing.
My wash routine is to rinse once in cold water with a squirt of Biokleen Bac-out and then add another squirt of Bac-out and wash in a hot wash/cold rinse cycle. I have a water softener and I have found even the smallest amount of detergent does more harm than good. Before moving to my current home, I had very hard water and no water softener and used many different methods to wash. Bac-out worked well then, but it wasn't enough. I had to use a detergent in the wash cycle as well."
Any questions, please feel free to convo me. This can be made four layers as well but they are $4.00 apiece.
