Samuel is a part of the Animal Series which focuses on the perennial denizens of independent show spaces, used book stores and alternative art festivals.
Drawn to a strikingly large scale, these subjects find themselves on stark backgrounds without the context of the people and places witch which they chose to associate. These drawings, which are made in ink on a variety of papers adhered to wood, have roots in both pointillism and the work of Alex Katz. Animal icons replace traditional crosshatching as a means of shading but the connection between these icons and the subject of the drawing is left ambiguous. Whether the animal serves as a totem to represent the subject’s personalities or a meaningless flight of fashion is left to the snap judgment of the viewer who is unable to avoid making this distinction despite knowing only what the subject happens to look like in one particular moment.
Samuel is primarily a musician but gets some hours at a record store when his band is not touring. He is looking forward to his next tour to Norway where there will be a large black metal audience. With Samuel, I moved beyond using different sizes of shapes to overlapping the same shape to give depth. I found this technique to be more like traditional cross-hatching and that it allowed for a wider array of shading.
