Brass Dragon Bookends, Made in Taiwan. Handsome and sturdy, these celestial hinged bookends are just 5 1/4' tall by 4" wide. I have dated them to the 1960s from the labels on the back, which read "Made in Taiwan, Republic of China". After the U.N. admitted Communist China (The Peoples' Republic of China) in 1971, Taiwan lost its seat, and thereafter was no longer referred to as "The Republic of China". One of the bookends does not stand up at a 90 degree angle, more like 87 degrees- compare first and second photo. Nice patina.
I am just rereading Naomi Novik's wonderful Temeraire series, about a dragon in military service at the time of the Napoleonic Wars - highly recommended.
