Orcas can be found in every ocean of the world, from polar seas to equatorial waters, but visitors and locals alike flock each year to see the resident populations of Johnstone Strait and other areas along Vancouver Island. Orcas can be playful and inquisitive, often approaching boats for a better look, or showing off acrobatic displays. Salmon-eating resident orcas live in matriarchal pods of up to 25, although you may also spot smaller groups of transient orcas moving through. Transients have more wide ranging areas, and usually prefer other sea mammals instead of fish.
