This is a simply stunning wand made from the wood of that most magical of trees, the Elder. It has lovely knobbly knots and two large splits caused by this branch rubbing against another as it grew. This branch was dead on the tree and most of the bark had been lost, so the wood has weathered to a darkish colour, lightening towards the tip, with here and there a pattern of very fine black lines reminiscent of ink drawing. Feather light and immensely well balanced, this wand seems to be an extension of your hand as soon as you pick it up.
I think this wand has an air of quiet watchfulness, as well as a reserved quality that's rather difficult to get past. I get the impression that it would be very precise, possibly to the extent of being a little nit-picking and overly finicky... but that's not necessarily a problem, depending on your own point of view. It might be fairer to say that it's a wand that will insist on doing things properly, according to true tradition and the old ways, with no corner cutting or modern innovation. It has a feeling of great age, but I think it's more like a stern grandmother who gives lectures on duty and responsibility, than the sort who bakes your favourite cookies! I don't think it would suit a novice, anyone very young or anyone with a touch of the fluffies about them.
Elder is the retreat of the Elder Mother, powerful matriarch of the hedgerows, woods and semi-wild places. She is the one who takes revenge on the despoilers of the countryside, and you cross her at your peril. It is said that you should never burn Elder wood on your fire, or the Elder Mother will burn your house down in retaliation. The wood of the Elder tree is especially highly charged magically, and can add power to any magical undertaking. Along with Hazel, it is said to be one of the best woods for wands. It is seen as a threshold tree, guarding portals to other realms, and legend has it that it never gets struck by lightning. It is believed that an Elder stick will kill serpents and drive away robbers, and the twigs have been carried during wedding ceremonies for good luck. It can be used for protection or exorcism rituals, and to bring healing, prosperity or sleep. It is particularly good for making women more sexually attractive to men, and for increasing the male libido!
Size: Twelve and five eighths inches long and about half an inch thick.
321mm x 12mm.
It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture of the actual wand, consecration suggestions and care instructions.
All my wands are, by their very nature, unique. They are grown, not made. They are all formed from twigs and branches lost naturally by the native trees in and around the perimeter of my totally organic garden. The wood is collected, identified, and sorted, then stored for several months to ensure it is properly seasoned. Then it is smoothed into the right size and shape for that particular twig. Finally, each wand is given at least two coats of organic vegetable-derived oil to protect and nourish the wood. This oil contains no chemicals or preservatives and is exactly as it comes from the press. I will not cut trees to get the wood, and if I’ve used prunings I’ll say so. I will not use power tools of any kind, and I certainly won’t use any artificial chemical substances such as stain, dye, paint, or glue. If you like, you can embellish your wand in whatever way you choose, with paint, carving, cords, ribbons and crystals, but I leave them as pure and natural as possible while still being beautiful, practical and non-splintery. All wands will be given another coat of oil before dispatch, wrapped in paper, padded with shredded paper and posted with their relevant literature in a stout tube or custom made box to ensure safe arrival. All the packaging material is reused, recycled and/or recyclable, so please dispose of it thoughtfully.
