Helicoprion, more commonly known as a whorl tooth shark, is an extinct shark that swam the seas of the Permian (290 million years ago). It is a shark that is distinguished by its unique circular saw shaped dentition on its lower jaw. Not a lot is known about Helicoprion, including exactly how the circular tooth whorl is positioned. There are a few theories about tooth whorl positioning and I chose to represent the most dramatic and (in my opinion) visually interesting position having the whorl exposed and extending outside of the mouth (a simple google image search shows the different possible whorl positions). Some scientists theorize that the teeth have been specialized for breaking open ammonite shells or spearing a meal while swimming into a school of fish.
This hand made plush is approximately 24.5 inches long from tip of nose to tip of fin, 5 inches wide (not including fins) and is stuffed with polyfil. It is made with a combination of charcoal gray, white and light pink fleece as well as white and black felt for the teeth and gills.
**NOTE** This plush is cute, but is intended as a display piece rather than a cuddle toy for babies or small children. For adults or mature children only please.
