(From a translation offered by Liberian peace activist, Leymah Gbowee)
Desmond Tutu offered this definition:
"A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."
In 2008 I was commissioned by a friend to do a series of crosses using the bright colors of South Africa and this inspiring African word. They were to be thank you gifts to several people who had helped her with charity work there. I recently discovered, after unpacking from a move, that I still have a few of them left and was so happy to see them again. I love their bright, colorful designs, so I thought I would post a few here on Etsy. This cross is made of white earthenware clay. I painted the designs in brightly colored ceramic glazes, fired, than covered with a clear, glossy glaze and fired again. This cross is 3 3/4” (9.525 cm) tall and 2 3/4” (6.985 cm) wide and hangs from a red ribbon.
