Think you can't make bread???? Yes you can! This bread is so easy a 5 year old (with supervision) can make it - try Aunt Sally's Beer Bread mix! One minute preptime from start to oven, simply pour mix into bowl, pour in one can of warm beer (we like light beer), stir with a spoon for 30 seconds (yes, I said only 30 seconds!!! overstirring will cause your bread to deflate and be tough), pour into a greased loaf pan, and bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. I use butter to grease my pan and brush the top of the bread with soft butter when I take it out of the oven. Denser texture like a tea bread but flavored like a yeast bread - does not taste like beer. Tastes like a delicious, crusty yeast bread. Delicious with soups or stews, or toasted with butter and Aunt Sally's jelly for your breakfast. Delicious and unique treat, quick to make, delightful to give.
For new brides, I like to make a gift of a new loaf pan, a can of beer, and a couple beer bread mixes tied up with a ribbon and a kitchen towel.
This mix is also very versatile. Any fully carbonated beverage will work. My friend Kim likes this one: instead of beer use cream soda, add 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips and dried cranberries, when bread comes out of the oven brush with butter and sprinkle with sugar. Yum!
The flavor combinations are up to you!
Another delicious variation: after preparing mix with beer, stir in 1/2 tsp. garlic powder and 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Drop onto baking sheet and bake as you would drop biscuits. Brush with butter after removing from oven.
