Magnets hold and align the cover to the iPad 2 for a perfect fit. Because of the polarity of the magnets, it cannot be put on incorrectly. This cover activates the sleep mode when closed and wakes up the iPad 2 upon opening. This cover folds into a stand for landscape viewing and also positions the iPad 2 at an inclination for easier typing and glare elimination, just like the Apple smart cover.
Unlike some other covers I have seen, this cover folds inward so that the leather next to the screen is on the inside, which keeps the leather from picking up dirt from your desktop and transferring potentially damaging debris to your screen. I have tried many fabrics, microfibers and suedes and have found the leather screen cover to be superior as it does not hold dust and dirt that might scratch the screen. The cover will stay in place if turned upside down. This is a screen/front cover and does not include a back cover.
