"Thanks!" I said. "Eyeshadow," I shrugged.
He told me he liked my dress too, and I lifted my shoulders again and told him I always wear dresses and it was really nothing special. He started to mope but pulled himself out of it, and I vaguely hoped I’d finally had some success at training him to remember how unbecoming I found his sulkiness.
Later on, when the waiter came to clear our plates, J.D. asked if they had any dessert.
"You want something sweet?" the waiter asked J.D. "Well, here she is!" he said, holding out his arms and presenting me like I was a cake.
"Oh!" we said together, pretending it was true.
