I used authentic Mallorcan ikat cloth and linen to create this tote. I love it's cheerful ethnic pattern and I like to feel the connection with the tradition at the same time giving a new interpretation, a new look, new life to an old concept.
I brought this ikat fabric from one of three existing artisan ikat workshops on Mallorca island.
It's nicely heavy and sturdy and it is made of linen and cotton. The ikat pattern is an original design of Martí Vicenç, Pollença, Mallorca.
The bright colours of a fabric known as Roba de Llengües is probably the most characteristic visual symbol of Mallorcan art and craft traditions on the island.
The age-old cloth typically has a pattern of tongue-like shapes or Llengües of white interspersed with blue, green or red. The colouring technique is similar to that of Ikat. In the old days, yarn made of hemp (Cannabis saliva) was used in this hand-weaving process on large looms. But nowadays, Llengües cloth is mostly woven in a mixture of cotton (70 %) and linen (30 %) instead of using hemp. The yarn is first dyed in white, then sections are dyed in colour to achieve the chosen pattern.
This listing is for the bag you see on the pictures.
Made of beautiful khaki ikat ( 70% cotton, 30% linen) and cocoa brown fabric (55% linen, 45% viscose)
The lining is made of olive green linen (100%).
There is a big inside pocket.
The tote is big enough to put a lot of cool stuff in!
It's 16.5 inches x 15 inches big (42 cm x 38 cm) approx.
