ABOUT THE PRINT:

This 8x10” archival print is made from my original 10x14” watercolor, painted on location in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California.

All of my prints are individually made using light-fast inks on acid free 260 gsm watercolor paper. As with any archival art material, if it’s hung out of direct sunlight it will last for many decades. I do all my own scanning and digital color grading to ensure that the print is as close as possible to my original art.

The print will be sent to you unmatted and unframed, in a protective sleeve with an acid free backing board ensuring it reaches you in the best condition.

ABOUT THE PAINTING:

The Japanese Tea Garden at Golden Gate is a small park-within-a-park. The entrance to the walled area is just west of the De Young Museum and before you get to the botanical garden. There’s an admission fee – $5 for local residents, a little bit more for visitors. It’s the oldest Japanese garden in the US, originally built for the World’s Fair in 1894.

We always visited when we were in the area. Every time you’d see people step just inside the gate, mill around a bit, and head back out - deciding the fee is a bit much just to look at trees and ponds. It’s too bad, as it remains a tranquil oasis away from the crowded park.

The sculpted trees are beautiful all year round. There’s an arched ‘moon bridge’ and various picturesque carved and lacquered gates made by veteran Japanese woodworkers. Small sculptures and lanterns are scattered throughout. And of course there’s the large bronze Buddha cast in Japan in 1790. But for me the main attractions are these two intricate Pagoda style structures. The upswept shapes of the peaked roofs and the complex red beams make an interesting contrast against the masses of surrounding foliage. The whole effect of the garden is so exotic, you can easily feel yourself transported out of modern America and into a samurai epic.
