Here we have a colorfully striped silk dress from a Tennessee estate. The colors are grand - a true blue and a vibrant rust in a figured striped silk. This is a late 1880s - early 1890s silk dress with rust velvet plastron and collar. The unboned bodice has a cotton interior with wrap front and rust braid to trim. The sleeves are slightly puffed and cut on the bias. The skirt is in 2 layers, with silk cut straight with a pleated back over a cotton base that is edged at the hem with the same striped silk and has a rust hem braid. The bodice hooks under the silk and velvet. It is not common to find a dress in this size and wonderful color range from the period.
Label:none
Size: Bodice: Bust: 36" Waist: 28" Shoulders: 13 1/2" Sleeves: 20" CB Neck to Waist: 14" Skirt: Waist: 28" Waist to Hem: 38"
Condition: Excellent but for a alteration to the under bodice. Fabric is fresh, crisp and clean. No stains or holes. Armpits have light wear. The under bodice has had a section cut out at the center front. This matches a hand sewn seam in the velvet plastron, so I suspect a neckline alteration was contemplated at one time and then regretted. When the bodice is closed, all is well as you can see.
