Lightweight, funky earrings made with vintage postage stamps, these beautiful United States stamps from 1988 feature a rose breasted grosbeak on a dogwood tree and a saw-whet owl perched in some type of conifer. The reverse of each earring plays off the sky blue behind the birds, and is striped blue and white. Pink and turquoise glass beads with a bit of gold sparkle below.
I first mounted the stamps atop a sturdy piece of cardboard from the recycling bin and adhered a scrap of coordinating paper to the back. I then painted the cardboard/paper/stamp sandwich with layer upon layer of Mod Podge glue for durability, finishing it off with several glossy, water-resistant coats of Collage Pauge. Finally, I attached sterling silver ear wires and lovely complementary beads.
The rectangular portion of the earring measures approximately 1" x 1 1/8". Including the ear wires and dangles the earrings are about 2 3/4" long. The photographs above show all four sides of the pair.
Happy bird watching. Happy singing.
