I use thick leather 7-8oz (about 1/8”) that is dyed black and double hand stitched with black waxed cord. The images are pressed into the leather and then painted, this ensures that the images will show through clearly no matter how much wear your guards take. I bevel and burnish the edges of the guards until the edges are round and smooth, then the leather is treated with a sealer. I reinforce the first two stitches with steel wire and use adhesive to bond the back of the stitching to the leather.
