Every child looks forward to Christmas. For me, it wasn't the presents or family get togethers--even though I looked forward to them almost as much. For me, I looked forward to the the cookies. Most importantly my Mother's Sugar Cookies. While she has hundreds of cutters, we only used THE cookie cutters: a hen that was my Grandfather's favorite, a tree cutter made by my uncle in his high school shop class, a curvy Christmas tree, a bell passed down generations, and a much loved star. All of these cookies were made from the same dough, yet the star, with its bright yellow sugar and sharp points was by far the best. The star was the one cookie I would break on purpose taking it off of the baking trays and dunk it--still warm--in to a cool glass of milk. I loved to watch the milk change color to a pale yellow and to this day I still make sure to dunk my sugar cookies. My Mom would always save some of these stars and freeze them. On those rainy days where I came home from school in a bad mood, those star cookies would come out of the freezer and would join a glass of milk on the table. We would sit, just the two of us, and snack on those happy cookies. They still had that Christmas magic left in them because I never left that table feeling anything but happy.
