These three candle votives are decorated with macabre images. A gentlemanly skeleton, an ominous raven and an elegant candelabra -- a perfect addition to any unique home decor.
Grandiose is not too strong a word to use to describe the manner in which a Victorian funeral was conducted. Curtains would be drawn and clocks would be stopped at the time of death. Mirrors were covered with crape or veiling to prevent the deceased’s spirit from getting trapped in the looking glass. A wreath of laurel, yew or boxwood tied with crape or black ribbons was hung on the front door to alert passersby that a death had occurred.
The Victorians were the last society to truly celebrate death in such an elaborate and formal manner.
I stain each image by hand to give them an antiquated look.
Standard tea light votives.
They measure 2.5 inches tall.
