When Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted in 1815, it was the largest known eruption in over 1,300 years. The massive dust cloud produced precipitated a mini ice age throughout the world in 1816 resulting in widespread crop failure. In Switzerland where Mary Shelley, John William Polidori, and their friends were staying with Lord Byron the unseasonal weather forced them to stay indoors. They decided to have a contest to see who could write the scariest story, leading Shelley to write Frankenstein and Polidori to write The Vampyre. In addition, their host, Lord Byron, was inspired to write a poem, Darkness, at the same time.
This brooch is made from 100% pure Angora fur (don’t worry, the fur is brushed from the rabbits – I love bunnies!) which is incredibly soft and warm to the touch. A tiny amount of glittering electric blue Angelina, along with two Swarovski crystals has been added to the surface to complete the snowball appearance.
Angora is more challenging to felt than the wool I normally use but the result is really worth the effort. This beautiful brooch is even nicer in person, it’s difficult to capture the glittering surface of the brooches in the photos.
This brooch comes in 3 different sizes/price ranges:
