Black Oak is a truly striking timber. This batch from storm damage near Calistoga, CA has heartwood that ranges from a dark cinnamon red to almost rose and the sapwood is usually caramel colored with coffee-brown lines in the medullar rays, which has the highly unusual effect of the sapwood being a darker color that the heartwood. There is also a lot of the "ray-fleck" oak is known for , and random patches of light tan color in the sapwood sections, all of which adds up to a really remarkable timber. This particular piece has a small but prominent void with the rich dark brown and black tones & wild grain typical of the process of the tree compartmentalizing an injury.
All of the bowls, platters, plates and dishes, whether they are bark-edged, "square," 5-sided, winged, or round are completely functional, and can be used for food (many of them are equally suited simply to display as sculptural pieces as well). They are all very well sealed, so if they are used for food they clean up really easily, and just need a light hand rinsing or washing. Do not put them in the dishwasher or soak them in the sink.
I hand turn every piece offered for sale here, and they are all my own designs. Everything is produced from locally salvaged timbers. All my work is completed with old-fashioned, pure oil, non-toxic, food-safe, child-safe finishes.
