Inset flush into each pieces' back is a small but powerful neodymium magnet. This allows the puzzle to live in a vertical world and transforms it from a table-bound educational game into a piece of wall art. You can build a portion of the puzzle and leave it for later or challenge someone else to complete what you've begun.
Etched onto the pieces' fronts are the major rivers, lakes and reservoirs as well as the state capitals. Etched onto the backs are the states' two letter abbreviations. The orientation of the text indicates which direction is north (i.e., when the text is oriented ledgibly, north is up).
A discontinuous grain pattern means that the wood's grain direction is unique for each piece. This makes the grain lines appear almost geological or even agricultural and adds to each pieces' individuality.
With three exceptions, each of the 46 pieces is a state. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a piece (but not a state). Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Long Island are combined into one piece with etched lines showing the borders. The same goes for Delaware and Maryland.
It's shown here on my Puzzle Board & Wall Mount (sold separately). It allows you to work on and display the piece on your wall. When you wish, you can pop the Puzzle Board off the Wall Mount to work the puzzle at a table or elsewhere. It's perfect for passing the puzzle around at a party and letting friends and family test their geography knowledge.
