Their engagement had taken so long. both family's farms were struggling, and he refused to marry her until he knew he could provide for his family. So they waited. And waited. He kept working on the crops and livestock, and arguing with the bank; she kept her job at the town grocer's, and set aside a bit each week to buy fabric for sewing her trousseau. She made the last stitch on the last robe the same day he sold the farm. They would make a new life; together.



This robe is an amazing example of folk art [quilting], translated into another medium [lingerie]. All seams are French [flat felled] with small, occasionally uneven, single needle stitches - showing signs of the garment being sewn entirely by hand. There are no open seams from which to take a sample of fabric for a burn test; however, the material appears to be silk, rather than rayon.

The pale peach Peter Pan collar is edged in a 1/4" wide scalloped blush pink trim, finished with a hand stitched buttonhole stitch; the collar closes with a single fabric covered button & loop. The yolk neckline is gently gathered at the bottom with double rows of alternating running stitches; a sweeping "Quilted Feather" applique (1" wide by 6" long) in blush pink accents the yolk - each feather edged in a buttonhole stitch, "veined" with an embroidered stem stitch, and framed in perfectly executed bullion stitches. The yolk closes with a second fabric covered button and loop closure; the rest of the robe is open (without closure).

The blush pink (1/4" wide) scalloped edge continues from the Peter Pan collar all the way down the front of the peignoir (finished in a hand sewn minuscule buttonhole stitch). A total of seven *perfectly mirrored* Quilted Feather appliques march down each side of the front of the robe - again, each is "veined" in a embroidered stem stitch, edged/finished with a buttonhole stitch, and accented with bullion knots. The hem of the robe is French finished [flat felled], to match the remainder of the robe's seams.

The billowing sleeves are finished with petite little cuffs - edged in the same 1/4" wide blush pink scallop (finished in a buttonhole stitch).

Very Good Vintage Condition: No rips or tears to the material; all seams strong; all appliques are firmly attached and show no signs of fraying. There is one faint yellow stain (1/2" diameter) towards the bottom right hand side of the robe, as well as one 1/8" brown stain near the bottom of the hem on the back panel; there is a single pinhole next to the seam, half way down the garment on the left side.
