Dream Boats is a 1918 book published by Doubleday that was both written and illustrated by Dugald Stewart Walker. Subtitled "Portraits and Histories of Fauns, Fairies, Fishes and Other Pleasant Creatures, this 219 page book inclues a number of fairy tales written by Walker and 4 color plate and 16 full-page black-and-white illustrations.
With tales like "Stay At Home Heart," "Pollen People, " The Daughter of a Comet King" and
"A Litte Dream that Wandered," the stories are sweet and perfect for very young to very old fairy tale fans. Walker's style is very whimiscal, as evidenced by the starting line of "Second Teeth:" "Fauns and fairies and fishes do not shed their first teeth and so they cannot shed their youth and joy."
Then there is the amazing artwork -- the color plates are ravishing, and I'm a huge fan of Walker's black-and-white illustrations, marvels of detailing and wonderful examples of the art nouveau style.
Very much Walker's book, down to the design on the cover -- the dot within a circle was a little signature mark that he left on drawings and correspondence -- this is a rare and wonderful treasure.
BOOK CONDITION
The cloth cover lacks a dust jacket and shows some fading and damage on the lower quarter of the front cover and a small amount around the top. The spine and edges show rubbing and the tips are heavily bumped.
The interior has one ownership plate inside the front cover, and a later blank page has another ownership inscription. The binding is is very good condition and all pages are very securely attached. The pages show a small amount of age-related yellowing. There is a small amount of waving on the first 45 pages, but it's minor in nature. The book does not smell musty. All of the illustrations are in place. The interior of this book is in good, solid condition.
