To the best of my knowledge, this antique capelet dates from the 1890s. For Victorian, which is so often black on black on black, it has a wonderfully cheerful and cute look. It appears to be all hand sewn, and the fabrics are gorgeous: The black velvet has small cuts in its nap, cuts which expose gold threads. The ruffle is lustrous green silk with an ikat pattern. The neck ruffle is lined in this green patterned silk. The lining is heavier twilled silk in black. Where the interfacing is exposed, I see it is linen. The capelet fastens with two big hidden hooks and loops at the neck.

Condition: Fair to good, which isn't bad for all that silk and the age of the piece. There is wear inside the collar and a good handful of marks and stains on the ruffle and inner neckline. I've shown the inner collar, including the worst of the wear, along with a stain on the ruffle in the last square. The edge of the ruffle is cut in a zig zag, without a hem, and it is evenly raveled, and doesn't look tattered in the least. In fact, when worn or displayed, the capelet will not look much flawed.

Size: The only fitted measure is the neckline.
