In 1853, a certain Alexander Wood developed a medical hypodermic syringe with a needle fine enough to pierce the skin. Shortly thereafter, the first recorded fatality from a hypodermic-syringe induced overdose was Wood's own wife from self administered morphine. One gentleman who definitely should not have brought his work home with him.
Equal parts Gothic, Dexter and Victorian London, this syringe necklace is as noir as the night is long. Modeled on an old turn-of-the-century anesthesia syringe, this beauty was once all glass and cold steel, ready at a moments notice to administer all manner of chemicals into the needy bloodstream. To cure, to numb, to escape and to destroy - amazing how such a simple instrument is capable of such a dizzying array of possibilities.
The syringe measures 1 1/2" from the tip of the menacing needle to the plunger and just over 1/2" wide. I've hung this one on a 24" antique silver plated chain.
Completely hand carved, the syringe is cast in the finest white bronze and then hand finished. It is then silver plated and finally given a patina to bring out all the details and give it an authentic aged look. Straight out of a Poe novel, this syringe will bring out the Gothic in anyone.
