In Montessori primary classrooms, children as young as 4 or 5-years-old may receive lessons in the functions of parts of speech. I this designed this Preposition Box as a first introduction to grammar, appropriate for lessons within a Montessori classroom or your home. Even very young children are curious about our language and the function of words; this lessons capitalizes upon a child's sensitive period for language-acquisition.

Maria Montessori, a pioneer in early childhood education, associated different shapes with each of the parts of speech. Nouns (persons, places, or things) are conceptualized as black, stable pyramids; while verbs (actions) are conceptualized as red, active balls. In two-dimensional form, a noun is a black triangle, and a verb is a red circle. All words that modify a noun are also triangles; for example, an adjective is a medium-sized, medium-blue triangle, while an article is a small, light-blue triangle. Likewise, adverbs are small, orange circles. Preposition, which link two nouns together, are upside-down green moons.

In the classroom, I traditionally follow the lesson on nouns with a lesson on verbs. Prepositions can then follow along with the other parts of speech.

Included in this set:
Square Paper Board Box with a Green Moon Painted Top (measuring just under 4.5" x 4.5" wide and just over 2.25" tall);
5 Laminated Cards (including statements with prepositional phrases);
1 Plastic Dog (that can be positioned relative to the bowls as the cards indicate);
2 Small Bowls;
5 Green Felt Moons (that label each preposition included)

Please note: Materials are an original design and cannot be reproduced for sale. Also, the items in your box may vary slightly from those shown. For example, the dog and bowls may be a different color or pattern than in the photographs above. However, please be assured that the quality of all items will always be consistent with those shown!!! :)
IN CONTRAST TO THE IMAGE WHICH PICTURES A WOODEN, HINGED LID ON THE BOX, YOUR BOX WILL BE BROWN, ROUND, PAPERBOARD AND WILL HAVE A REMOVABLE, "GREEN MOON"-PAINTED LID (AS PICTURED IN THE LAST PICTURE ABOVE).
