From the Cover : "Philip Marlowe knew this luscious mantrap had been a witness to MURDER."
The Big Sleep is a hardboiled crime novel, the first in Chandler's acclaimed series about detective Philip Marlowe. The work has been adapted twice into film, once in 1946 and again in 1978. The story is set in Los Angeles, California. When a dying millionaire hires Philip Marlowe to handle the blackmailer of one of his two troublesome daughters, Marlowe finds himself involved with more than extortion. Kidnapping, pornography, seduction, and murder are just a few of the complications he gets caught up in.
The story is noted for its complexity, with many characters double-crossing each other and many secrets being exposed throughout the narrative. The title is a euphemism for death; it refers to a rumination in the book about "sleeping the big sleep".
In 1999, the book was voted ninety-sixth of Le Monde's "100 Books of the Century." In 2005, it was included in "TIME's List of the 100 Best Novels."
Condition: Some minor age discoloration. In nice shape, cover art is bright, fully intact with no tears but a few scratch marks. It would look great framed! The binding is square and tight, but has some discoloration. Also, there is a date stamped on the bottom of the binding.....Sept 5. There is a red smudge on the back cover, probably from being stored next to a red book.
A fun stocking stuffer... or to tuck in your purse, briefcase, or laptop case for your trip home for the holidays! A good conversation starter too!
No one has written in it.....if you'd like to give it as a gift, you'd be the only dedication on the inside cover!
