First edition 1901 book of garden reminiscence and advice, 'Content in a Garden' by Candace Wheeler, the "Mother of Interior Design". She tells the story of her home and garden on the Onteora Mountain in upstate New York during the Victorian era. The pages are an unusual but quite pleasing format that allows for the addition of the detailed line drawings which are done in a very attractive sage green color and appear at the beginning of each chapter and also occasionally through the text. Ex-library but a serviceable reading copy.

The author was one of America's very first female designers and the founder of the Society of Decorative Art in 1877. Born in 1827, she writes in the distinctive style of the Victorian era ... truly a step back in time and an intimate personal window into the life of a trailblazer in the field.
