It's shown here on my Puzzle Board (sold separately) but also looks great on your refrigerator or other magnetically receptive surface.
Etched onto the pieces' backs are the states' two-letter abbreviations. Glued onto the backs are small magnets allowing the puzzle to live in a vertical world.
This puzzle features a sandblasted surface treatment which transforms the wood's face from flat to highly textured. The variations in wood density reveal themselves as ridges and canyons. One can't help thinking of topography or landscape when looking closely.
The textured surface can aid in completing the puzzle since each piece's ridges and canyons must align with those of neighboring states.
With three exceptions, each of the 46 pieces is a state. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a piece (but not a state). Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts are combined into one piece with etched lines showing the borders. The same goes for Delaware and Maryland.
The wood is hard, old-growth pine stolen from the termites in a collapsing barn along the banks of the Colorado River just outside of Austin, TX. It's got beautiful colors and patterns and aromas.
I made two of these puzzles from a piece of sandblasted pine. The puzzle for sale here is identical to the one pictured except for variations in the wood grain.
