Background:
Rampion is not a re-telling of Rapunzel, but takes Rapunzel, it's symbolism and archetypal characters as a starting point for a very personal exploration. I was very interested in playing around with key symbols, such as Rapunzel's hair and the tower, as well as with the archetypal characters of the witch/crone and the prince. Rather than going into lengthy interpretations here, I'd rather the reader gathered their own meaning from the story.
Finally, Rampion is primarily a visual tale. Apart from the introduction, I use words sparingly, so it's important to let yourself linger on the images and let meanings arise and seep in. I used a fold-out, accordion structure for the book to help the flow of images, so the reader can approach this a little like a Japanese scroll if they wish.
Who is this book for?:
This book is suitable for all ages, young and old.
Physical description of the book:
This book is written, illustrated and handcrafted by me. It measures approx. 10.5 x 7.5cm and consists of 20 pages which fold out in an accordion style construction. It is a combination of collage and digital print (originals were drawn in pencil and watercolour) and I have made only 20 copies.
