Copper and Glass

This is a translucent ruby red vessel blown into a copper sleeve creating a "corset" effect by puffing out the top of the vase once the copper has been attached. The glass creates "windows" through each hand cut negative space in the copper sleeve. These are really fun to make and quite exciting as there is only one shot to fuse the two during the glass blowing process. Once the vessel and copper come out of the kiln the next day, I address the surface of the copper with a wire brush to bring out it's texture and reaction to the fire while being formed. The texture of the copper takes on a very "leathery" look.

This vase measures 7.25 x 4 x 4 inches.

This piece makes a wonderful vase, candle holder or just decorative accent.

This work is a collaborative series I have been working on with artist and tinsmith, Aaron Keel. Aaron and I have combined our creative juices in this new series. All the copper work is hand forged with intricate cut patterns and copper weaving. Even the copper rivets are hand cut and pounded using copper wire!

Once the copper form is complete, we blow our glass forms into the mold so that they adhere or "fuse" together to become one. Part of the allure is watching the molten glass at 2100 degrees grow through the negative space of the mold, illustrating the wonderful properties of hot glass!

They are all one-of-a-kind.

We are proud to present this new and unusual line of vases, gothic mugs, lamps, and porch lanterns.
