This pendant features an acid etched piece of copper that has been riveted onto a textured piece of bronze. The copper has been etched with a hand drawn mandala reminiscent of patterns common to the practice of mehndi. Mehndi is an ancient form of body art that is practiced in India, Pakastan, North Africa, parts of the Middle East and Indonesia. The Mughals brought it to India in the 12th century, but henna has been used to adorn the body since ancient times. The patterns are applied by hand to the hands and feet of the wearer with a paste made of henna and oil. They are applied mostly for weddings and festivals. The designs are beautiful and are generally symbolic of protection, fertility, abundance, good luck and other blessings. Common designs are floral, paisley, and mandalas.
The pendant has a hand hammered bronze bail and includes a 20 inch 3 strand leather necklace with a handmade bronze clasp. The pendant measures approx. 2 3/4 (including the bail) x 1"
