The story of the Great Captain Sword by Marto of Toledo, Spain, begins with Gonzalo Ferdinaz de Cordoba, a great military leader in the time of the Catholic Kings (15th and 16th centuries). He won his first victories during the Granada conquest. Later, he distinguished himself in the campaigns to Naples and Sicily. Called "The Great Captain", he created the army that was the base of the Spanish military power during the 16th century.
The overall length of the letter opener is 29 cms - 11 inches. The blade is steel while the handle is cast metal with a silver matte finish. This model has "TOLEDO" and "Made in Spain" stamped on the obverse blade at the base. Newer models have "Made in Spain" around a shield stamped on the blade. This one has a double-edged blade, while the newer models are single edged.
