This piece is wheel-thrown and made of mid-fire porcelain. It is glazed a translucent teal crackle with deep blue and green variations. A Morpho butterfly is painted on either side of the teapot in black underglaze by hand using a graphite transfer process. The inside of the teapot has a clear glaze.
These pieces are part of the Teresa's Tea Collection named after my mother, a tea lover. I had contrived this collection to be an ode to her; she loves butterflies, and so butterflies adorn each piece. My mother loves color and I've tried to match the glaze colors used in this collection to the colors of the butterfly wings, like deep blue hues of the Morpho butterfly and the bright red of the African Glider.
Morpho butterflies are particularly beautiful creatures. A nocturnal butterfly, they are an endangered species that are killed for their iridescent wings. They tend to dwell high in the canopy of rainforests, but they will fly through all layers of the forest to find a mate. They are associated with change, rebirth, luck and are thought to be wish granters.
All my pieces are food, microwave and dishwasher safe, though they prefer hand washing.
This design is part of an open edition collection. The piece pictured may not necessarily be the piece you receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.
I've had to stop accepting commissions and special orders to focus on designing and making new work. Sorry!
