DESIGN - I loved making this art quilt. It is made from dupioni silk that I hand dyed myself, machine pieced in panels representing the bottom of the ocean, the beach, Cornish cobbles, quaint and quirky cottages on a hilltop and a very pretty moody sky with clouds. I live in St. Ives Cornwall and I am constantly inspired by these elements of my home town. I particularly love whitewashed cottages with lichen covered rooftops and old fashioned cobbled streets, the beach and beach finds and the sea
THE SEA BOTTOM - the bottom panel represents the sea bottom. It is heavily decorated with seaweed, shells and floating anemone designs. For the seaweed I used pieces of raw silk, textured threads and yarns and real pieces of dried seaweed with beads. It is decorated with many beautiful feature beads and real shells collected on the beaches of St. Ives in Cornwall
The olive green gradually changes to yellow ...
THE SANDY BEACH - heat distressed chiffon fabrics, more textured threads and yarns as well as real limpet and mussel shells were used to decorate the beach. It features some machine quilting, beading with seed beads and hand stitching
The yellow gradually changes to soft earthy browns and greys ...
THE COBBLES - these were created using reverse applique. I layered many different textured shimmering and metallic fabrics as well as chiffons and silk fabrics to a panel behind the quilt. Machine quilted through the layers, then cut through some of the cobble shapes to reveal the fabrics underneath. All of the cobbles are soft and complementary tones of browns, soft orange, taupe, silver greys and soft natural tones that you would find on a cobbled street in St. Ives. No cobbles are the same
THE COTTAGES - are on a softly sloping hillside which represents "The Island" of St. Ives. The cottages are appliqued with machine quilting and each cottage and each roof is made from a different material. The fabrics used in the cottages range from hand dyed and hand painted cotton, silk, crocheted lace, monoprinted and printed fabrics and other fabrics from my stash. All printed, monoprinted, hand dyed and hand painted fabrics were so printed, dyed or painted by myself
THE ROOFTOPS - are appliqued with machine quilting. I used a variety of materials again to represent the quirky shapes of St. Ives Cottages ... such as lace, textured fabrics, heavily embroidered thick cotton, hessian and some of these have had paint and ink applied to represent lichen distinctive of Cornish cottages
THE SKY - is a soft grey through mauve depending on how the light catches the silk (100% dupioni silk). It shimmers ever so gently as only silk can. I chose this deeper colour for the sky because I love moody stormy skies. It features soft clouds and I have scattered drop beads across the sky to represent rain drops. The drop beads catch the light
COLOUR - the colours in my quilt graduate softly from one colour to another. Soft mauve through pale silver grey, white and cream cottages with soft natural and brown toned rooftops, the cobbles are soft browns, greys, mauves, some natural colours, the beach is quite a vibrant yellow but this makes the seed beads shine and notice more and sets off the shells. The yellow very softly graduates into a pale green which gradually gets darker towards the bottom of the quilt
INNER BINDINGS - the inner bindings are made from graduated hand dyed silk
OUTER BINDINGS - made from a soft yellow cotton
THE BACK - is one large panel made from 100% dupioni silk hand dyed by me in graduating tones that match the front
HANGING SLEEVE - there is a hanging sleeve on the back so that the quilt can be displayed as wall art
SIZE - the overall and completed size is one metre square. 100 cm x 100 cm

I am a textile artist living in St. Ives, Cornwall. I love to work in mixed media with paint and stitch. I love to manipulate fabrics and plastics with heat to alter their appearance and create interesting textures. I use these pieces along with found objects from the beach and nature (shells, sea glass, pottery pieces, seaweed, feathers, leaves, seed heads and pressed flowers) which I mix with vintage photos and fabrics to create one of a kind pieces of textile art
