I was lucky enough to have a young Great Spotted Woodpecker come visit me in my garden on my birch tree, a handsome fella he was and he let me get really close. I like to think he wanted me to stitch his graphic loveliness, so that I did.
Stitching my young master woodpecker perched on a tree made me think of my favourite puppet made from wood, so I started reading the original Carlo Collodi book 'The Adventures of Pinocchio'. To my utter delight I came across a part where Pinnochio's long nose gets pecked small again by lots of 'helpful' woodpeckers thanks to the eternal good nature of the fairy. (A truly fantastical read). "How good you are" is said by Pinocchio at that moment to the fairy, it was this that inspired me to stitch the words to represent the steadfastness of a good nature and that it should be cherished.
The embroidered woodpecker has been stitched in coloured blackwork patterns and satin stitch onto 'Patrick's' Liberty print then appliqued onto the hand quilted gingham linen tree. The hoop is a vintage Duchess having searched high and low to display some of my embroideries in these as I love the aged simplicity of Duchess hoops, the back has a brass hanging loop so the work can be hung by that or with a ribbon. The linen has been stretched and sewn like traditional methods no gluing to the ring, the fabric backing disc covers this and has been signed in stitch, S.Teasdale.
An original art embroidery 2011.
Hoop measures 6 inches/ 15cm. *Please note the hoop is vintage and therefore has an aged/worn wooden look to it.
