First Edition 1855! This is the original book by Graves published prior to our Civil War. His letters of religious devotion, or heresy, depending on how you view him, are in the original format. There is considerable foxing, or discoloring of the paper, but it does not smell musty and the binding is holding up well. The edges and corners of the book are worn/bent, as seen in the photos. In pencil in the front is the name of the owner of the book, it looks like F. Oliveya Booke, although that may not be correct. Graves sustained heavy damage from the Union armies when they took Nashville in 1862. This man is one of the reasons we call the south "The Bible Belt" He also established the Nashville Indian and Missionary Association in 1846. It is amazing that this 150+ year-old book has survived. Ask any questions before you buy, due to the nature of its age, the book not returnable. According to the Library of Congress, there are about 75 known copies of the original edition in libraries and museums.
