My grandfather would sit after work on the back porch beside the irises. I would love to sit with him - I remember the shiny hot summer days with the sun burning down and having this moment to be quiet with him. One night he woke me up and said let's go see something - of course that sounds wonderful. He carried me on his hip to watch a cicadae slowly coming out of it's shell. Grandpa had the flashlight on it and it was shimmering iridescent pale green. This print is for him. I wanted to create extremely direct and bold forms for the flowers and leaves. The image includes a ladybug in flight on your right. She is flying awkwardly, like they do. There is also a grasshopper on the left and the cicadae in the leaves. All the insects remind me of childhood summers.

This print is larger than most of my work. I had a new large aluminum screen made for me and completing the series was a new experience. The print image is 20.5" tall and 35" wide. I have framed it very simply, with a strong simple wood frame and white mat. The edition is limited to 40 prints. The print is 7 colors with handpainted elements of the insects and parts of the flowers.

This original print was handpulled in my studio during fall of 2011. It is signed and numbered below the leaves.
