Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel was one of the most influential designers during this time, and has continued to have a huge influence throughout the 20th century. Above all, her designs were simple and comfortable, understated yet supremely elegant. Chanel spearheaded the craze for costume jewellery, moving away from the tradition of making imitation jewels in favour of exaggerated designs that flaunted the fact they were not made from precious gems.
