I built this piece while I was teaching high school art, with a long commute, and many other commitments. I was feeling that I didn't have a moment to stop and sort out my swirling thoughts, to the point I felt my head was going to explode unless I let the thoughts fly free. That is how the "Bird Lady" came about. You may have an opposite reaction to this piece as many others have. Some say it reminds them of dreams being set free or giving flight to important desires.
She is built with porcelain clay, fired to cone 5, and glazed with Amaco Velvet underglaze. I build hollow, like a coil pot except I use small slabs of clay joined and shaped. I included a picture of her before she was fired. You can see my Jamesville, NC classroom in the background. I wish they would stop closing great small schools! Miss you Jamesville & Bear Grass.
