The instructions will take you step-by-step through the process of making the bag from the pre-cut fabric pieces supplied. You can then make as many further bags as you like using the instructions and your own fabric.
There are other kits on Etsy for gorgeous shoulder bags that are lined, interlined, quilted, or pleated, and which have clasps, pockets, bells and whistles. This is not such a bag, but it is a practical, functional, everyday bag, that is also very easy to make. If you are a beginner sewer, and/or you don't have the time or space to lay out your sewing equipment to tackle an extended project, then this is the kit for you.
The fabric provided is RECYCLED. In this kit, it is a pretty pastel floral polycotton, as shown in pictures 1 and 2. It is easy to sew and easy to wash, and makes a relatively lightweight bag that can be folded small enough to fit in your handbag or pocket.
I keep one of these bags permanently in my handbag, for all the times I forget to take my weightier bags out with me!
If floral is not your thing, check out my other listings for the same kit with different fabrics.
I pride myself on writing in a friendly, jargon-free manner, and the instructions are fully illustrated with line drawings. If you have any difficulties, I'm more than happy to answer questions by e-mail.
This is such a useful bag, and the instructions help you to make it so quickly, that it will pay you back time and again. The instructions are written specifically with the time-strapped and frugal in mind. If you want to make additional bags, the instructions include details about sourcing and cutting cheap and second-hand fabric, but of course you can use a new fabric of your choice.
This kit is an ideal gift for children and other beginner sewers, that will keep on giving.
The instructions include information on how to alter the size/shape of the bag to your own preferences, and how to customise it should you wish.
In addition to this kit you will need:
- Ordinary cotton or polyester sewing thread*
- A sewing needle
- A few pins
- A tape measure or ruler
- Sharp scissors
- A sewing machine (this is optional - there's no reason why you can't sew this bag by hand, although it's obviously quicker by machine)
*The choice of colour of sewing thread is up to you, but with this fabric white, cream, pale blue, pale green or pale pink would all be suitable.
If you've got your own fabric ready to go, see my Shoulder Bag PDF Pattern, available here on Etsy, which contains these same instructions for electronic delivery.
