I have enjoyed making sake cups and pouring vessel even more after discovering how tasty top shelf Junmai Dai Ginjo sake is. I make these for myself, for the joy of using them. Not only are they great for Sake, they work well for serving Tequila, and Bourbon too.
..........

The surface effects and coloration are results of the flame
and natural ash of a 48 hour woodfiring. The Shino glaze on this piece is made with a local clay. It has a deep reddish brown metallic luster to one side, and on the side that was facing the fire, the kiln's flame and ash left its mark on the shino fusing with the glaze, and melting to make a glassy grey glaze that highlights the linier angles.

The movement of the facetted textural designs were created during the throwing process. While the piece is still a thick cylinder at the beginning of the forming, I cut strait down through the soft clay with a texturing wire. After all of the facets are cut, I finish throwing the bottle, stretching the form into the shape I desire. The clay gives me clues as to how the final piece will end up. Sensitivity to touch it a very important part of make the piece in this way, and not every one works out as I plan....only the most successful survive the cut(literally)and find their place in the woodfiring
