Compiled by J. Wesley Hanson, this is a 1846 first edition, with publishing information stating "Lowell: Published by Jonathan Allen."
There are two color plates at the front of the book, and the remainder of the book consists of day listings with the selected flower and verse. There is an index of flowers and the date they were dedicated to in the back of the book. The print in this book is very tiny, owing to its small size. You will note that I photographed the book next to a magazine, just to give you a better feel for its size.
In absolutely superb condition, this 165-year-old book would be a treasure for the vintage book collector or a gardener who loves the Victorian era, and anyone who loves the symbology of flowers.
BOOK CONDITION
The brown tooled cover shows a small amount of bumping and bending at the corners and a tiny bit of rubbing at the upper and lower spine. The gilt design on the front and the spine and bright and brilliant.
The interior of the book shows foxing and browning on the early blank pages. One of the blank pages had a dedication and note written in pencil, but it has faded to such an extent that it's almost impossible to read. There is some foxing on the vellum that separates the two color illustrations, and a small bit of spotting here and there around the edges of the pages. The text block edges have a gilt finish, which remains bright and clear. The binding is strong and all the pages are securely attached.
