Traditional Zen painting is a unique form of art. Zen art is bold, energetic and direct, depicting an image with a few strokes of the brush to capture and express the essence or spirit of the moment. Zen art is often used as a teaching tool and intended as spiritual inspiration, and as an expression of the artist’s awareness. An important component of Zen art is that the character and spiritual force of the painter is transmitted into the painting by the concentration of the artist at the time the work was brushed. Once a line is put down, it cannot change. This makes sumi-e ink painting a demanding feat of the brush. But in its direct simplicity, one finds playful profundity that can be appreciated by one and all. The art form engages the mind as well as the eye through the poems and symbols – even if one is not interested in Zen as philosophy or religion. Zen poetry is often earthy and full of common sense.
