These earrings were inspired by the "Ivory Bangle Lady" of York. Her remains and elegant burial have fascinated historians. A wealthy African woman living in Roman York, she was buried near the Ouse river with jewelry and a perfectly preserved blue glass jug from Cologne. These earrings were inspired by that blue glass and by the darkened metal of the Roman jewelery excavated from York.
I have similar earrings in crystal and dark amethyst: http://www.etsy.com/listing/85254969/mesmers-baubles-venetian-hollow-glass
as well as amber glass: http://www.etsy.com/listing/76093758/lucifers-thumbprint-black-brass-and
Your earrings will come wrapped up in a little gift bag. (A lovely customer has told me she reuses the gift bags, filling them with lavender and herbs and using them as drawer sachets to keep the moths away!)
I have written about the Ivory Bangle Woman, the inspiration for these earrings, on my blog: http://feralstrumpet.com/2012/01/04/the-ivory-bangle-woman/
All handmades are created one at a time in my little Victorian home in a cobblestone street in the shadow of the medieval walls of the city of York.
