I don't know what the pin is made from; it could be bone or ivory. In an attempt to try to see if it was a plastic substance, I heated the tip of a needle until it was red hot; it did not leave any mark when I tried to stick it into the back of the pin.
Whatever the material is, it was broken at one time as it appears to have been very carefully glued back together. You can see this on the backside, but it is not evident on the front. The clasp part of the pin mechanism is broken.
NOTE: An Etsy member just brought to my attention that there is a section missing on the right side between the two clusters of grapes. She is correct...if you look at the right side you'll see a tiny little piece sticking up above the large cluster...it looks like there must have been a leaf in this area that has broken off.
This brooch could use a good cleaning but I'm not going to attempt it.
This pin must have been much loved to have been so carefully repaired. It has a decidely Victorian feel to the high relief design.
Please see photos for condition and don't hesitate to ask questions. Thanks for looking!
