These earrings are a tribute to the British 19th century fossil collector, Mary Anning, whose discoveries proved influential to the understanding of the history of life on earth in the early 19th century. They are designed to be paired with this necklace, shown in the last picture, available in a separate listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/89202320/the-fossil-collector-steampunk-rosary
Mary Anning was the daughter of a cabinet maker, she gleaned the "curios" from the Blue Lias cliffs at Lyme Regis. The locals called them the devil's fingers, snake-stones and verteberries and in this necklace these unearthed treasures are formed of Czech glass, veined agate, freshwater pearls, picture jasper, carnelian, quartz and patina'ed brass.
Earrings measure 2 1/4" long including ear wires.
For those who are curious, I have written about Mary Anning, the mother of paleontology, on my blog: http://feralstrumpet.com/2012/01/02/the-fossil-hunter/
Your earrings will come wrapped up in a little gift bag. (A lovely customer has told me she reuses the gift bags, filling them with lavender and herbs and using them as drawer sachets to keep the moths away!)
All handmades are created one at a time in my little Victorian home in a cobblestone street in the shadow of the medieval walls of the city of York.
