Thornton Burgess was a naturalist from Massachusetts who wrote the most delightful animal stories for the Boston Globe. Many of these stories were published in books wonderfully famous illustrations by Harrison Cady.
His farm is now a nature preserve where you can walk trails through the Green Meadows, the Green Forest and down to the Laughing Brook and Smiling Pool where these stories took place about a hundred years ago.
The stories are true to nature, but the characters have human like qualities and personalities. He imparts good moral wisdom with a huge dose of humor. These are some of our families favorite books to read to the children and happen to be duplicates of ones we have on our own book shelf.

Published by Grosset & Dunlap, all of these books were well loved library books. The yellow cloth bindings are tight, pages have been softened by wear, some have been taped as a tear here in there occurred, some have writing, some smudges/stains. All the books have shelf wear, but are still quite readable. These chapter books have fun illustrations and large, easy to read print for young readers to enjoy.
Honestly ~ I may very well enjoy reading these as much as the children do. These are great for a special family time at bedtime with everyone taking turns reading.
