This is a contemporary fiber art sculpture by me, Rachel Hunnicutt. It was hand crafted in a simple, neutral color palette and the forms were inspired by photographs of coral reefs. I was particularly interested in exploring the idea of coral bleaching, in which the sea coral becomes light or white in appearance.

This piece is anchored in a large wooden bowl found at a secondhand shop here in Tuscaloosa. I painted it with many coats of white paint before adding the crochet pieces.

I love finding interesting forms in nature and am particularly interested in the ocean. I hand crochet each individual piece, then carefully arrange them and glue them securely in place. The process takes quite a bit of time, but begins to feel like a meditation as I form each part of the project. Much love and many good thoughts go into each piece I make.

It is so important to me that my work is original and includes special details - I hope you enjoy it!

Measures approximately 9.5 inches (24 cm) in diameter and 3.5 inches (9 cm) tall.

***The yarns are all acrylic, EXCEPT for the brown yarn which is made from camel hair. I do not normally use animal fibers, but this yarn came from the Snow Leopard Trust and supports snow leopard preservation & impoverished communities that share their environment.***
