This Eco-Friendly plus size OOAK Elf Sweater Coat is a size Large to 2XL. (model is a 2X and there is still plenty of room) This is a mixture of 20 different turquoise and blue sweaters made out of wool, cotton, acrylic, and mohair. I used all purple maxi-lock serger thread. This coat is very warm and functional. The hood is not the longer style hood, it is shorter and comes to a point, it is very cute.
I first wash all the sweaters in HOT water and dry in the dryer on the Hottest cycle-this helps stabilize the fabrics and felt any wools. I then cut up the sweaters I have carefully chosen from second hand stores and free piles at my church. I then choose the color thread and set up my Serger which is a 4 Over-lock Serger ( a special type sewing machine that uses four spools and loops and locks the stitches) This makes the coat very sturdy, I do my best to hand tie and hand sew spots that need reinforcement. If you happen to see a loose string tie it and cut it.
ALWAYS wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. After a few washes if you feel like it would stand up to a delicate wash with cold water in the washing machine that is up to you-but I don't suggest this--your coat will last for years if you take care of it correctly. But I wouldn't dry in the dryer just to be on the safe side.
You will be the talk of the town wearing this coat. When I go out wearing mine I get so many compliment and people wanting to know where I got it and how I made it. This coat spins so wonderfully, they are so fun to wear!! Great for Renaissance Festivals or just every day use.
Thanks Katwise for your inspiration and creative visions.
